IMAGE SIZES FOR YOU ADS: A CHEAT SHEET
When designing your social media page or uploading images for your ad creatives, it's essential to take into account the recommended size to avoid losing quality.
Social networks can crop your images so don't worry about aspect ratio so much. Just make sure that your key scene elements and text will stay in the viewer's focus or safe area.
It's slightly different when it comes to recommended sizes. It's hard to remember all of them given that they may change as well. That's why we've created a cheat sheet for you to quickly find the needed size whenever you may need it!
Let's start with the very first thing you will design on Facebook — your page.
Recommended size: 170x170px (128x128px displayed on smartphones and tablets).
As displays may vary for different devices, make sure to place all visible elements (logo, text, people's faces) in the center of the image. Also, note that the profile avatar will be displayed in a circle so you shouldn't place anything on the corners.
Page cover picture:
Your cover picture should be rectangular and 820x321 px in size (640x360 px display on smartphones). Note that there will also be trim lines. Place all the key scene elements in a safe area of 640x360 px.
You can also upload a video cover. Recommended dimensions are at least 820x312 px and the desired video length is 20-90 seconds.
For the best display, we recommend using the .JPEG image format and the .mp4 video format.
Standard post: 1200x628 px, no special requirements. However, if you're going to promote this post, keep in mind that the image may contain no more than 20% of the text including titles and logos.
When loading a link, a picture of the link is also displayed. Recommended dimensions are the same as that of a standard publication: 1200x628 px.
Covers for events:
Recommended size is 1200x628 px. If you are promoting an event, then the rule of 20% of the text applies.
Video covers for events:
Recommended 1200x628 px and video length from 30 seconds to 5 minutes.
Image formats for Facebook and Instagram ads:
For feed ads on Facebook or Instagram use 1080 x 1080 px images or use 1.91:1 or 1:1 aspect ratio.
For ad creatives in Instant Articles, use a 9:16 or 16:9 ratio, but the bigger the better. When adding a link, the ratio will be different —1.91:1, the minimum size is 1200x628 px.
For advertising with Stories use the same dimensions as for regular Stories — 1080x1920 px.
For carousel ads, Facebook recommends using images with a 1:1 ratio with a minimum size of 1080x1080 px.
Instagram advertising rules are pretty much the same as Facebook's. The most important rule is to add no more than 20% text to the image. Here are the main dimensions that will be useful to you in your work:
Profile picture: 180x180px, a square to be cropped to fit in a circle. Remember to place all important elements in the center.
Different sizes are used for publications in the feed, their ratio varies from 1.91:1 to 4:5. Although Facebook recommends using images with a minimum width of 1080px.
For Stories we want to use 1080x1920 px.
For advertising in the feed of square images, the minimum size is 600x600 px, the OK size is 1080x1080 px, and the maximum size is 1936x1936 px.
